사람 성격 판단 기준이 여럿 있는데, 자동차 핸들 잡는(hold the steering wheel) 자세도 하나라고 한다. 영국의 심리치료사(psychotherapist) 로하니 누어 박사에 따르면, 운전할 때 손 위치는 기질과 성격의 많은 부분을 드러내 보인다(reveal a lot about your character and personality).

운전 처음 배울 때 익힌 ’10시와 2시' 방향 두 손의 위치를 끝까지 고수하는(cling to it to the last) 사람이 있다. 완벽주의자(perfectionist) 성향이다. 뭐든지 원칙대로 하고(play by the rules) 세부적인 데 집중한다. 괜찮은 직업(decent job)을 갖고 평탄한 삶을 사는(lead an easy life) 경우가 많다.

오른손만으로 핸들 오른쪽 아래를 잡고 운전하는 유형은 미니멀리스트(minimalist) 스타일이다. 호들갑 떠는(make a fuss) 걸 싫어하고, 꼭 필요한 것만 하고, 현재 상태 유지를 선호한다. 친구도 한 손으로 꼽을(count on one hand) 정도만 있다.

핸들 아래 양쪽을 두 손으로 잡는 사람은 보스(boss)형이다. 타고난 지도자 기질(in-built leadership qualities)을 갖고 있고, 본인 능력에 대한 자신감(confidence in their abilities)과 과단성(decisiveness)이 두드러지는 특징이다(be their middle names).

핸들 가운데 축 위에 한 손만 얹는 사람은 모험가(adventurer)형이다. 위험 마다하지 않는 삶을 살면서(live on the edge) 감정을 있는 그대로 표출하며(wear their hearts on their sleeves) 마음껏 인생을 살아간다(live life to the fullest).

핸들 축 양쪽에 두 손을 얹는 사람은 외교관(diplomat) 스타일이다. 사려 깊고(be thoughtful) 큰 그림을 보는 형이다. 논쟁이나 충돌을 잘 비켜 간다(steer clear from arguments and conflicts). 한번 언성을 높이면(raise their voices) 무섭다.

불도저형도 있다. 한쪽 손바닥을 핸들 축 위에 대고 여차하면 경적 울릴 태세로(be ready to blast horn) 달린다. 남이 끼어드는 꼴을 못 본다. 야심을 달성하는 데 방해되는(get in the way of achieving their ambitions) 건 무엇이든 용납하지 않는다. 일단 밀어붙이고(push ahead), 좋지 못한 결과는 나중에 처리하거나(deal with the fall-out later) 못 본 체해 버린다(turn a blind eye to it).
